Computing

At SHH we have designed a Computing curriculum that is engaging and inclusive of every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Computing; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that ensures a progressive development of children’s skills and understanding.

Intent

Computers and technology form a vital part of the modern world and an understanding of their use is increasingly important. We want our pupils to be able to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. We want our children to be able to make use of technology to create content and our broad computing curriculum offers opportunities to be creative with programming, digital art, digital sound, text and video. Children use a range of ICT tools to find, explore, analyse and present information as well as developing an understanding of how computers and computer systems work.

Implementation

Our computing curriculum is based on the Teach Computing curriculum written by the National Centre for Computing Education. E-safety lessons are woven throughout the units of work to enable children to explore the safety implications of the technology they are learning to use.

Our computing curriculum is split into three main areas.

Computer science

Children are taught how digital systems work. They develop their ability to think logically and solve problems and use these skills to create programmes and a range of digital content.

Information Communication Technology

Children learn how to use ICT to express themselves and develop their ideas using a range of software and devices.

Digital Literacy

Children will learn how to interact and communicate online. They will learn about the potential risks of working online and how to keep themselves safe. They will also learn about appropriate use of the internet.

Pupils have dedicated computing lessons as well as using ICT to support learning across the curriculum. We use a range of technology to deliver the learning and children will have experience with using a range of devices such as:

  • Laptops
  • Chromebooks and Netbooks
  • iPads
  • Roamers
  • Beebots
  • Digital cameras
  • Speakeasy microphones

Impact

Our Computing curriculum ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
